Heart of Arkansas Backyard BBQ  Cook-Off

Lonoke County Council on Aging Announces Heart of Arkansas BBQ Cook-Off to benefit Meals on Wheels

Lonoke, Arkansas, July 25, 2017 According to a recent report by the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger, Arkansas is ranked #1 in senior hunger nationally. An estimated 24.8 percent of Arkansans over the age of 60 are food insecure. As with people in other sectors, financial hardship makes seniors especially vulnerable. For many seniors, transportation or physical mobility limits are barriers to getting the groceries they need every week; for others, the absence of supermarkets or grocery stores further limit their access to healthy food.

The Heart of Arkansas BBQ Cook-Off is a prime opportunity to sample some delicious barbecue, while supporting Meals on Wheels. This year we are holding the cook-off in conjunction with the Lonoke County Fair on September 23, 2017. The Fairgrounds is located at 1006 West Third Street in Lonoke Arkansas. This event will be sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.

This cook-off is more than a just a cook- off; all proceeds will benefit the Lonoke and Prairie County, Arkansas Meals on Wheels Program. Of course, since it will be located at the county fair there will be plenty of fun, food and entertainment for the whole family.  The general public will have an opportunity to become the People’s Choice Judge ,and have the good fortune to savor delicious BBQ made by the cook-off’s talented grillers.

Enjoy your day helping your young chef get started in competitive cooking with our new Heart of Arkansas JR. BBQ Cook-off. We want to start training the next generation of BBQ-ers. To do this, we have added a JR. BBQ Cook-Off for children ages 6 to 16.

Saturday’s fair events kick off with the Mare and Mule Pull, 4-H & FFA Livestock Judging Contest, Lawn Mower Racers and much more, and of course the Heart of Arkansas BBQ Cook-Off.

Competing teams will receive Team Of the Year (TOY) points. The People’s Choice portion asks that you donate a portion of your BBQ bliss to the public to sample and judge. All proceeds from the people’s choice competition will benefit the Meals on Wheels program. Kansas City Barbecue Society rules and regulations will be used for the competition.

Team Entry is $75.00 and Jr. BBQ-er entry is $25.00 per child entering the contest. Cash and Trophy prizes will be awarded.
